Roman Centurian

The Roman Empire was among the most powerful economic, cultural, political and military forces in the world of its time. There were 70 million people under the rule of the empire and the empire in today’s map covers most of Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.

The Centurion symbolises the strength of the Roman Empire. This particular centurion was a flag bearer who wore a wolf skin.

The Roman army was able to defeat many other armies, conquer and defend lands far from Rome.

The Samurai

The samurai was a warrior class within the ancient Japanese society. They lived by a code called “bushido” which means “the way of the warrior”.

This particular sculpture is of a samurai not in armour but in a richly decorated traditional kimono. The sculpture shows the strength through his stern gaze. The strength comes from years of martial arts training and discipline.

Inspiration from black and white samurai movies directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshiro Mifune.

The Geisha

The geishas are traditional female entertainers who act as hosts. Geishas spend many years to learn dance, singing and playing musical instruments as well as being poets and calligraphers.

The geishas are noted for their white powdered faces, their richly embroidered kimonos and defined hairstyles.

This sculpture shows the geisha with eyes lowered and a gentle smile.

The inspiration for this sculpture came from a simple question from my daughter – “why is it that there are no female sculptures?”

The Eagle Hunter

The Mongolian steppes are very barren and inhospitable places to live. In the footsteps of Genghis Khan the Eagle Hunter hunt wildlife such as rabbit and foxes using trained eagles. The eagles are taken from their nest as hatchlings and trained to hunt. The bond between man and eagle is built over years of training.

This sculpture show an Eagle Hunter looking out for a suitable quarry, with a trained eagle unhooded and ready to launch into the air.
